“Did we say you could sit with us?” Diamond said, covering her fries with her hands when Terrell sat down and tried to grab a few. “But you can have some,” she said to Kennedy, pushing it toward her.

“I’m sharing with her!” Nevaeh said. Kennedy laughed and took a fry from each carton and put them in her mouth together.

Then the girls started asking her a million questions—her name, if she had any pets, all about her hair. I couldn’t help listening, but those weren’t the things I wanted to know. I would have killed Nevaeh if she’d asked, but I wished I knew if Kennedy had a boyfriend.

The hot dance teacher came out and clapped her hands for her kids. She caught me looking at her and gave me a smile that made me blush. I felt Kennedy and Terrell watching me. Then Nevaeh had to do this fake lovey-dovey routine, hugging me and Kennedy before she went back to her class. That got me another smile from the teacher. My whole face was burning as I followed Kennedy and Terrell back to our classroom.

It smelled so good in there. Noel was humming as he stirred pots.

“Come on up, y’all,” he said. “I’ll show you what to look and taste for to see if it’s done. Then we’ll get the rice going.”

I hoped it seemed normal that I would stand by Kennedy, kind of behind her. That way I could look at her. She had three earrings on one side, glittery stuff on the edge of her lips.

I was so busy looking at her that the little twelve-year-old kid next to me was waving a bunch of spoons in my face before I noticed we were passing them around so we could taste the beans.

“I think they need more salt,” Kennedy said. “Don’t you?” she asked me.

I had barely tasted them—they were too hot—but she grabbed a salt shaker and shook some on my spoon. “Now try it,” she said.

“Give me that,” Terrell said, grabbing the salt and shaking it on his spoon. Then he tried to stick it in Kennedy’s mouth. “I’m sharing with her,” he said in Nevaeh’s voice, putting his hand on his hip and glaring at me.

Kennedy pushed his hand away, but she laughed along with everyone else. Most of them didn’t even know what he was talking about, but when Terrell did his voices, most people couldn’t help laughing. They probably thought Terrell knew Kennedy from before or something. He acted like it.

My blood was pounding in my ears so loud, I couldn’t hear what Noel was saying about how to make perfect rice.
